Description

Print with abrasive composite materials (such as carbon or glass fibers) with this extremely resistant, ruby-tipped 0.6mm print core for the Ultimaker S5.

Also compatible with the Ultimaker 3 printers under special care for the feeder motor's gear. An error message might appeir on the printer itself and in Cura.

How to use the print core CC Red 0.6

The print core CC Red 0.6 is specially designed to print with composite materials on the Ultimaker S5. Here you can find all information on how to use the print core.

Using the print core CC Red 0.6

Using the print core CC Red is similar to using any of the other print cores on the Ultimaker S5. The print core can be changed, loaded, or unloaded via the configuration menu on the printer as described in the Ultimaker S5 manual.

Print core CC Red install

Compatibility

The print core CC Red 0.6 is intended for use on the Ultimaker S5 only. Although the Ultimaker 3 uses AA and BB print cores, we strongly advise against the use of the print core CC Red 0.6 on this printer.

The reason for this is that the feeder of the Ultimaker 3 is not optimized for working with composite materials. When using composite materials on the Ultimaker 3 – even when a print core CC Red is installed – the ‘teeth’ of the knurled wheel inside the feeder will erode and cause unreliable material flow and under-extrusion. In the Ultimaker S5 feeder the knurled wheel is made from a stronger material, which means that it won’t wear when using composite materials.

If you load a print core CC Red 0.6 into the Ultimaker 3, it will show you an error message to inform you about the risks. Please be aware that continuing and using the print core CC Red with the Ultimaker 3 is at your own risk and not officially supported by Ultimaker.

Supported materials

Since the print core CC Red 0.6 is specifically designed for use with composite materials, it is not supported with any of Ultimaker’s own materials. Ultimaker materials are non-abrasive and can therefore be used with the standard AA or BB print cores. Composite materials of third-party material suppliers can however wear out the nozzle of the AA and BB print cores. For this reason, they should be printed with the print core CC Red.

Because of the open filament system on the Ultimaker S5 and our collaboration with several leading material companies, profiles for various third-party composite materials are provided via the Marketplace in Ultimaker Cura. To see which of these materials require use of the print core CC Red, please visit the third-party materials compatibility page.

Maintenance

To ensure the print core CC Red 0.6 is kept in optimal condition it is important to maintain it correctly. Compared to the standard maintenance schedule for the Ultimaker S5, maintenance of the print core CC Red 0.6 is slightly different. On this page you can find detailed information on the frequency and type of maintenance that should be performed, based on 1,500 printing hours per year.

Clean the print core

Maintenance of the inside of the print core CC Red 0.6 should be performed once every month, or if the nozzle is clogged. Using the Ultimaker cleaning filament is the most effective way to clean and unclog the CC print core on the Ultimaker S5. The print core can be cleaned by following the print core cleaning procedure from the menu on the Ultimaker S5. Detailed instructions for this can be found in the Ultimaker S5 manual.

⚠Caution: Do not use a needle to unclog the CC print core. If the point of needle touches the ruby, this can irreparably damage it.

Clean the nozzle

While using the print core CC Red 0.6, material can sometimes get stuck to the outside of the nozzle and degrade. Although this will not damage your printer, it is recommended to keep the nozzle clean in order to achieve the best print results. Due to the fact that composite materials tend to stick to the nozzle more easily, this should be done more frequently than with the AA and BB print core.

Before starting a new print, always clean the nozzle. The material can be removed from the outside of the nozzle by taking the following steps:

  1. On the Ultimaker S5, navigate to the configuration menu, select the print core, then click on the icon in the top-right corner and select Set temperature.
  2. Use the controls to set the target temperature to 150 °C.
  3. Wait for the material on the outside to get soft. When the nozzles are hot, carefully remove the material with steel or brass wool, or a cloth.

Note: Do not use Scotch-Brite pads to clean the nozzle. This can cause slight wear on the outer part of the bottom of the nozzle.

⚠Caution: During this procedure do not touch the nozzle and be careful while cleaning it as it will become hot.

⚠Caution: Do not use tweezers or anything sharp to clean the nozzle. This can damage the ruby insert.

Check the quality of the nozzle cover

As described in the Ultimaker S5 manual, regular checking of the nozzle cover is important as the heat of the nozzles may cause wear on the nozzle cover over time. It is recommended to check the quality of the cover at least once every month when you use the print core CC Red 0.6.

Examine the bottom of the print head to see if the holes where the nozzles come through are still round and the cover still forms a good seal. Also gently open the fan bracket to check the other side of the nozzle cover.

If the nozzle cover looks like it needs to be replaced, please follow the instructions from the Ultimaker S5 manual. The print core CC Red 0.6 comes with four spare nozzle covers.
